I visited the Egham web site and found it quite informative, good pictures & graphics. The reason i visited the site in the first place is that I am researching my family history "Mays".

At one point in the early 1900's a relative lived at # 70 Hummer Rd. I was wondering how I might get ahold of a road map of Egham and area. They are hard to come by in Canada. Also do you know if it possable to obtain a copy of the telephone book listings for "Mays" in the Egham area.

Thanks very much for any assistance. Mike Mays

I enjoyed the search through your web site. The graphics are well done and the information on shops etc was helpful. The only thing I was looking for that I didn't find was in the shops and services section. A church I was looking for, St. John's, couldn't be located. Is the listing for churches complete or a partial one.

Also, some of the addresses were not complete and some lacked postal codes. A great site, very helpful

No problem with the delay, I understand about being busy. I can appreciate how much work you have if keeping up the web page is a part-time occupation. The web site is very well done and I enjoy the pictures of the town. I have been to the site quite often and have gotten quite a bit of information and assistance from it as well as useful links to other sites in England for my research.

I have been able to contact other places in Egham as well that will prove helpful I really appreciate the time you took to send the telephone listings. They will be invaluable in my search. I appreciate the offer of the map of Egham. My address is 153 Patterson Rd., Barrie, Ontario, Canada, L4N-7B8.

If you ever need any assistance for things in Canada or the US send me a message. Again, Thanks very much Mike

Hi again Shaun Still doing family history research. I found one family member listing his occupation as a "Drayman" or similar, the handwriting is so-so. Any idea what that is ? Thanks, Mike PS: I posted the same question on the Surrey Bulletin Board. mays wrote:

Mike A dray is a low cart without sides for heavy loads thus a Drayman is a man who would use a dray. The most popular use of a dray was to deliver Barrels of beer. Drays where often pulled by shire horses.

Its been a while since I last wrote you. I haven't been on the Egham web site for awhile either and I like the new site. It is quite helpful, especially the map area. One question if I could.
Have you ever heard a business by the name "MW FORD" in Egham ? I can't find it in any business directory or internet search. It may or may not have been related to the butcher trade. I have a grandfather who's trade was listed as butcher and listed MW FORD as his employer in a 1914 application form to the Surrey Constabulary. Thanks for any info. Mike

In 1914 over 2000 people became special constables to replace the policemen who enlisted in the armed forces. William Ford, Butcher, 21 High Street, EGHAM. Family Butcher. Telephone number 108. Animals killed on the premises - entry from Kelly Directory 1913. 21 High Street was owned by Charles Day for a long time, he let it out as a shop. William Ford took over the space sometime after October 1910 and April 1911 and left on the 5 August 1930 (detail from the records of rates payable). No mention of a MW FORD. However William is often abbreviated to read Wm. Could this possibly have become MW ?

Thanks for the information on FORD. It does appear that this is the shop I was looking for. The information I got "MW FORD" is a transcript from a transcript through a third party so it could have been transposed from Wm Ford.
