EGHAM-BY-RUNNYMEDE HISTORICAL SOCIETY
The Society was founded in 1967 and aims to promote an interest in all aspects of local history. This includes the collection and preservation of historical items, lectures, social functions and outings for members and displays and lectures to outside organisations. Artefacts, documents and memorabilia are preserved, including present day items for the historians of today and of the future.
Anyone with an interest in local or family history is encouraged to join.
Our Local Area.
That part of north-west Surrey containing Egham, Egham Hythe, Englefield Green, part of Sunningdale, Thorpe, Thorpe Lea and Virginia Water.
Meetings
These take place in the Main Hall of the Literary Institute, High Street, Egham on the last Thursday of the month except for August and December.
Meetings are free to members. Non-members are welcome on payment of a small charge.

Social Events
An annual dinner is usually held in February and a Christmas Social evening in December.
The Egham Museum
The Museum is situated on the first floor of the Literary Institute. It is run by volunteers who are members of the Historical Society.
The Museum opens 3 days a week, on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday from 10am to 12.30pm and from 2pm to 4.30pm.
Frequently changing displays of local interest are on view.
Admission is free.
Group visits may be arranged by appointment with the Honorary Curator.
Research Facilities
There is a research room which contains Microfiche and film readers for the 1881 Census index to London & Middlesex, Surrey, Berks & Bucks, the local 1891 Census, the local IGI, and Surrey indexes.
Copies of the 1841 to 1881 Censuses for Egham & Thorpe are available in paper form as are card indexes, maps, rate books, parish registers, monumental inscriptions, photographs and other documents.
Bound volumes of the Surrey Herald and Staines & Egham news papers from about 1910 to mid 1980's are available for viewing.
The museum also sells publications and other items such as reproduction Magna Carta scrolls and a wide range of postcards. Many of the books have been written by Society members to promote interest in the local area. A popular range contains many reproduction photographs.
